Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about image & video aspect ratios.
An aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an image or video's width and height, expressed as two numbers separated by a colon (e.g., 16:9 or 4:3).
Aspect ratio ensures images and videos fit correctly on different displays and social media platforms without stretching, distortion, cropping, or letterboxing (black bars).
Divide width and height by their greatest common divisor (GCD). For example, 1920÷120 = 16 and 1080÷120 = 9, yielding a 16:9 ratio. Our calculator automates this calculation in real time as you type.
16:9 is the universal widescreen aspect ratio used for modern TVs, computer monitors, YouTube videos, and HD video recording (1920×1080, 1280×720, 3840×2160).
For standard YouTube videos, use 16:9 (1920×1080 or 1280×720). For YouTube Shorts, use 9:16 (1080×1920).
Instagram supports 1:1 Square (1080×1080), 4:5 Portrait (1080×1350), 1.91:1 Landscape (1080×566), and 9:16 Stories/Reels (1080×1920).
Calculating and maintaining aspect ratio prevents image distortion (stretching or squishing). Downscaling preserves clarity while upscaling may reduce sharpness depending on resolution.
